Las Vegas loves its pets – from pups to kitties and everything in between. But our furry friends can be tough on carpets. Whether it’s the occasional accident, the trail of fur and drool, or that lingering “pet smell,” it’s important to know how to handle pet-related carpet issues. Here’s a pet owner’s guide to keeping carpets clean and fresh in Vegas:
1. Act Fast on Accidents: When Fluffy or Fido has an accident on the carpet (pee, poop, vomit), prompt action is crucial. Blot up as much as possible immediately using paper towels or a white cloth. Do not rub – you don’t want to spread it or push it deeper. For urine, after blotting, use a mixture of half white vinegar, half water to dampen the area and blot again. Vinegar helps neutralize urine’s ammonia odor. Then sprinkle baking soda to absorb moisture and odor. Leave it for a while before vacuuming. This is a quick home remedy. However, know that pet urine can penetrate the carpet backing and pad – that’s where odor can linger. If the accident is large or wasn’t found right away (say you discovered a dried spot), you likely need a professional pet treatment. Pro carpet cleaners use enzymatic cleaners that break down urine crystals and completely neutralize odorsfacebook.com, and have tools to flush out contamination from the padding.
2. Tackle Pet Odors at the Source: Even when there’s no visible accident, carpets can develop a general pet odor over time – especially with dogs (that “doggy” smell) or if a cat has marked territory subtly. Simply spraying air freshener or carpet deodorizer powder is temporary. To really deal with pet odors, the carpet (and possibly underlying pad) needs cleaning. Professional cleaning with odor-neutralizing agents can remove the sources of odors. For instance, at Sudz & Steam LV we use PURT (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) for urine spots and also general deodorizer that encapsulates and eliminates odors. If a home is really saturated (like moving into a place where previous owners’ pets left smells), multiple treatments or even pad replacement might be needed, but that’s for extreme cases. Regular cleaning prevents it from ever getting that bad. Remember, in our dry climate, we might not smell urine as strongly until a humid day or when steam cleaning starts – that’s because old urine crystals are activated by moisture. So don’t be surprised if during cleaning a strong odor appears; it means we’re flushing it out. Good news: post-treatment and drying, your carpet will smell much better.
3. Dealing with Hair and Dander: Pets shed – some more than others. Carpet is basically a magnet for pet hair, which also brings along dander (tiny skin flakes that cause allergies). Routine vacuuming is your friend. Use a vacuum with a beater bar or brush roll designed to pick up pet hair. Vacuum slowly in multiple directions to get hair out of fibers. For stubborn hair, you can even use a rubber broom or squeegee on the carpet to pull it up (it works!). But eventually, a professional carpet cleaning helps because the powerful suction can extract hair that’s tangled deep down that vacuums can’t reach. Also, steam cleaning lifts dander and sanitizes the carpet, which can help with that “doggy” or “catty” smell as well.
4. Preventive Measures: Consider some house rules or products to protect carpets. For example, have doormats at entries and train pets to pause there so you can wipe muddy paws (on the rare rainy day or after sprinklers at the park). Place runners or area rugs in pet’s favorite nap spots – easier to wash a rug than a whole carpet. Trim your pet’s nails; sharp nails can snag carpet fibers (and also scratch hardwood, bonus tip). If your cat occasionally hacks up hairballs, maybe keep a washable throw on her favorite carpeted perch spot.
5. Know When to Call the Pros: If your pet repeatedly uses the same spot as a bathroom, the odor can be very hard to eliminate with retail products. A professional can assess if the pad or subfloor is affected. We have tools like UV lights to locate all urine spots (some you may not even know about). Then we use deep injection of enzyme cleanersfivestarchem-dry.com and extraction. Similarly, if a pet stain has been sitting a while and has changed carpet color (urine can sometimes lighten or darken carpet dye), pros can try specialized treatments to correct that. Stains like vomit might contain dyes from food that are hard to remove – but we have solutions for those too. Essentially, if you’ve tried and the stain or odor persists – don’t give up, call us! We’ve seen it all, from puppy training gone awry to senior pets with issues, and we have methods to handle it.
6. Frequency of Cleaning with Pets: With pets, plan on cleaning carpets more often. We generally suggest every 6 months for homes with multiple pets or a single pet that sheds a lot or has accidents, and every 6-12 months for lighter-shedding or well-trained pets. This regular schedule ensures hair, dander, and any un-noticed little accidents are cleared out before they build up. It also keeps the carpet looking nice despite the extra wear from our four-legged family.
7. Quick Hack for Urine While Waiting for Pros: If you schedule a pro but the appointment is a few days out, and you have a fresh urine spot, keep it moist (weird tip, I know). But spraying a little water on it and covering with plastic can prevent it from drying and setting in, making it easier to fully remove when we arrive. Don’t soak it, just keep it from crystallizing.
Living with pets and clean carpets might seem challenging, but with prompt action and periodic deep cleaning, they can coexist happily. After all, a little paw print here or there is a small price for the love and companionship pets give – and thankfully, those prints and piddles can be cleaned! We love pets at Sudz & Steam LV, so we’re always ready with the best techniques to keep your home fresh for both you and your animal pals.
